I began using a light-painting technique in my night photography years ago. This eventually evolved into light painting on a smaller scale with botanicals. Much of my inspiration comes from 19th and early 20th century photography. Most of the photographs in these series were taken with a 4x5 view camera. The glass plates of Carleton Watkins prompted me to print my images on glass. I've been working on this over the past several years and have begun transferring color photographs to glass as well. Mounting the plates about a half inch above a white panel creates a shadow or projection when light shines on them bringing out a 3-dimensional quality in the image. Mary Ellen Hendricks |
